Check out these here things to do for fun after you read The Kid!

Write your own story about The Kid!

Things in Destiny, Colorado, have calmed down since everyone worked together to outsmart Snake-Eye Sam. Henry and Herbert send stories about The Kid back East to Mr. Strafford as often as they can. They’re the most popular stories in all the West. It takes a lot of work to keep up the farm and take care of the four Upton brothers. And it looks like everyone might soon be planning a wedding for Herbert and Miss Jameson, too. So Henry and Herbert could sure use your help! Write your own story about The Kid and read it to friends and family! Then go have a tall, frothy sarsaparilla. And share The Kid book with friends who you think will like it!

Check out an optical illusion puzzle.

Maybe if Snake-Eye Sam had counted these bars, he wouldn’t have been tricked so easily!

Can you try your hand at drawing your own optical illusion involving bars of some kind?

Find out more about sarsaparilla.

Did you know that this old-timey frothy drink wasn’t just to quench someone’s thirst? Can you do research online or at the library to find out what it was first used for? And can you find out where the plant that’s used to make it grows?

Map Herbert’s journey!

Download this map of the United States. Use online resources or visit the library to help you gather information and go through the book and trace Herbert’s trip on the map all the way from Philadelphia to Destiny, Colorado. (Remember that Destiny is made up, but in The Kid (page 54) it says that Denver is about a week’s ride to the north. Let’s assume a horse could ride about 15 miles in a day. Multiply 7 days by 15 miles, and get 105 miles. So Destiny is about 105 miles south of Denver on your map!)

The Kid

the debut novel by Jeff Schill

Fourteen-year-old Henry creates The Kid for Gunslinger Magazine to earn money for his family. Real-life outlaw Snake-Eye Sam sets his sights on The Kid, wanting to take down the fastest draw in the west. It all comes to head on Main Street at high noon.

Pull up a stool, have a tall frothy glass of sarsaparilla, and enjoy a tale full of quirky characters, snappy dialogue, and lots of heart.
