Stephen Davies writes picture books, chapter books, young adult novels and educational books. Many of his books are set in West Africa, particularly the Sahel region – the southern 'shore' of the Sahara Desert which includes parts of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

From 2001 to 2014 Stephen lived in the Sahel and ran a small recording studio. During this time he became very attached to the Fulani cattle herders of the region. He learned their language, adopted their food and dress, and accompanied Fulani friends on cattle herding trips. All of his African adventure books are inspired by the places, people and stories he encountered in the Sahel.
