Pau Estrada grew up in Spain. He studied literature at the University of Barcelona and later went to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship for graduate studies at Rhode Island School of Design. He now lives in his native Barcelona, where he is a teacher, an illustrator, and a video artist. Pau has illustrated many children's books in both Europe and the United States.

For Picasso and Minou, he studied Picasso's early life and work, spending many hours at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. Pau even brushed up on his French for a visit to the Musée National Picasso in Paris and to see Picasso's old stomping grounds in Montmartre.
