1. WRITING A BUSINESS LETTER (Exposition)
A Group Unit

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: requesting information from a public agency

Thinking Objective: Analyzing ways in which the choice of audience and purpose affect a piece of writing

Performance Rubric: Demonstrates familiarity with the elements of the writing process

2. REMEMBERING SOMEONE SPECIAL (Personal Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a personal narrative: informing others of a special someone

Thinking Objective: Analyzing the qualities of an important person

Performance Rubric: Narrates clearly; Includes emotional reaction to the event; Reader understands what writer wanted, why another’s help was needed, and what other person did; Includes strong emotional reaction to the other person as a result of the event

3. WRITING AN INTERNAL MONOLOGUE (Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a narrative: informing others about a character’s thoughts and feelings

Thinking Objective: Analyzing an emotional reaction to a situation

Performance Rubric: Provides excellent clues to indicate situations, settings, and emotions; Elaborates character’s wishes and past experiences affecting reactions; Reader understands character and reasons for internal monologue

4. COMPARING TWO PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT GENERATIONS (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about oneself and a person from another generation

Thinking Objective: Analyzing information by comparing an contrasting

Performance Rubric: Explains similarities and differences between writer and subject; Explains what was learned in the interview; Opening paragraph tells how writer got information; Conclusion explains what was learned from research

5. WRITING A VACATION BROCHURE (Descriptive Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing a descriptive exposition: informing others about state as a vacation site

Thinking Objective: Selecting relevant detail from research information

Performance Rubric: Introduction describes state’s appearance and uses sensory details to describes places; Body provides important information including: general facts, places to go, things to do, outstanding features; Conclusion suggests sources of further information

6. WRITING A LETTER TO THE EDITOR (Persuasion)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: persuading a public audience through a written audience

Thinking Objective: Analyzing and selecting relevant facts for a persuasive argument
