1. WRITING A CLASS MENU (Exposition)
A Group Unit

Writing Objective: Writing an Exposition: informing others about ourselves by writing a class menu of favorite foods

Thinking Objective: Categorizing foods into groups and developing descriptive vocabulary

Performance Rubric: Demonstrates familiarity with the elements of the writing process

2. WRITING ABOUT MY HOME (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about special things, places, and people at home

Thinking Objective: Analyzing what makes people, places, and things special

Performance Rubric: Describes special people, places, things in home; Gives reasons why special

3. DESCRIBING A FAMILY MEMBER (Descriptive Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing a narrative: persuading others with story dialogue

Thinking Objective: Analyzing character motivation and expressing it in written dialogue

Performance Rubric: Includes physical description; Provides information about character, behavior; Offers support for generalizations; Tells or gives examples of what is special

4. WRITING DIALOGUE (Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about a family member

Thinking Objective: Categorizing information for explaining the importance of a family relationship

Performance Rubric: Makes request, including two supporting reasons; Describes other character’s reaction to both request and reasons; Includes problem resolution; Presents conversation in dialogue form

5. STORY WRITING (Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a narrative: explaining a conflict, its solution and a character’s feelings

Thinking Objective: Analyzing a problem and devising a solution

Performance Rubric: Clearly describes problem an solution; Describes character’s feelings toward both

6. PROBLEM SOLVING (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about how to solve problems of prehistoric people

Thinking Objective: Hypothesizing solutions to problems
