Unit 1: Short Vowels
Apply the correct vowel sounds of words in context by
• recognizing breve diacritical marks
• identifying short vowel sounds in words
• discriminating among short vowel sounds in sentences with picture prompts
• using word meaning and sentence context to discriminate short vowel sounds in words
• reading short vowels in context

Unit 2: Blends and Digraphs
Recognize or contrast sounds of consonant blends and digraphs by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination and memory of initial blends sp, sc, sn, sk, sw, and sm
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of final consonant blends ld, lt, pt, mp, and nd
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of consonant digraphs ph, gh, wr, and kn
• reading blends and digraphs in context

Unit 3: Long and Short Vowels
Read long and short vowels by]
• identifying the short vowel sounds in initial or medial positions in one-syllable words
• categorizing words with long vowel patterns cv, cvce, cvvc
• recognizing when y is used as a vowel sound
• using long sounds in words as clues to word and sentence meaning
• reading vowels in context

Unit 4: Three-Letter Consonant Blends
Recognize or contrast three-letter consonant blends by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination and memory of three-letter consonant blends scr, spr, str, shr, spl, and thr
• using word meaning and sentence context to discriminate three-letter blends
• reading blends in context

Unit 5: Special Vowel Sounds
Develop auditory and visual memory of the ways we make special vowel sounds by
• writing, listening, and speaking the two ways we make the sound /oi/ as in boy and oil
• writing, listening, and speaking the five ways we make the sound /ô/ as in saw, auto, walk, cough, and salt
• writing, listening, and speaking the two ways we make the sound /ow/ as in cow and couch
• writing, listening, and speaking the three ways we make the sound /ü/ as in moon, rule, and new

Unit 6: Special Vowel Sounds: R-Controlled Vowels
Recognize or contrast special R-controlled vowel sounds by
• developing auditory and visual memory of the special vowel sounds /ar/, /er/, /ir/, /ur/, and /or/
• reading r-controlled vowels in story context

Unit 7: Silent Consonant Letters
Identify silent consonant letter combinations by
• recognizing the silent letters w(wr), k(kn), c(ck), b(mb), gh(gh), and t(tch) in words
• writing words with correct silent consonant combinations
• matching words with the same combinations
• spelling correctly words containing the combinations
• reading words with silent letters in story context

Unit 8: Special Vowel Review
Recognize and contrast special vowel sounds by
• writing words with r-controlled vowels
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of special vowel digraphs – au, aw, al as in auto, saw, ball; oi and oy as in oil and boy
• comparing the two sounds of
/oo/ as in book and moon
/ea/ as in meat and feather
/ow/ as in cow and low
• classifying words in categories according to special vowel sounds
• supplying vowel letter combinations for illustrated words
• selecting words with special vowels to complete sentences
