Unit 1: b, l, t, m, h, s

Identify the initial consonant sound/letter relationships by
• developing auditory discrimination and memory of the letter/sounds
• developing visual discrimination among the initial consonants
• relating initial consonants to the appropriate beginning sounds of words or pictures in context
• reading consonants in context

Unit 4: Consonants in Three Positions
Identify consonant sound/symbol relationships in initial, medial, and final positions in words by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination to identify positions of given letter/sounds
• writing the letters in a grid according to their position in words and pictures
• reading consonants in context

Units 5 and 6: Short Vowels I and I
Identify short vowel sound/symbol relationships (Unit 5: a, e, i; Unit 6: o, u) in initial, medial, and final positions in words by
• developing auditory discrimination and memory of the given letter/sounds
• using auditory and visual cues to identify the position of given letter/sounds
• applying knowledge of given letter/sound relationships and their positions to complete words and sentences
• reading short vowels in context

Units 7 and 8: Consonant Blends I and II
Recognize and contrast sounds represented by consonant blends (Unit 7: br, fl, cr; Unit 8: pl, dr, cl) by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of given blends in words
• discriminating among blends in words and pictures
• writing blends to complete words
• reading blends in context

Unit 9: Compound Words
Understand how compound words are formed by
• putting together compound words
• dividing compound words into component words
• using context to understand compound word meaning

Units 10 and 11: Consonant Blends III and IV
Recognize and contrast sounds represented by consonant blends (Unit 10: fr, sl, gr; Unit 11: tr, bl, pr, gl) by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of given blends in words
• discriminating among blends in words and pictures
• writing blends to complete words
• reading blends in context

Unit 12: Consonant Digraphs
Recognize and contrast initial consonant digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh; and final consonant digraphs ch, sh, and th by
• drawing a distinction between blends and digraphs
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of digraphs
• discriminating between given digraphs in words
• writing digraphs to complete words
• applying knowledge of given digraphs to words and stories

Unit 13: Long Vowels I
Identify long vowel sounds a, e, i, o, u in the word patterns cv and cvce by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of the letter and its sounds
• discriminating letter/sounds written in the cv and cvce word patterns
• applying knowledge of letter/sound relationships, word patterns, and context to complete words and sentences
• reading long vowels in context

Unit 14: Long Vowels II
Identify diphthongs ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, and oe in the word pattern cvvc; and letter y as a vowel; by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of the diphthong letter/sounds written in cvvc pattern
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of the long e and i sounds of y
• applying knowledge of letter/sound relationships, word patterns, and context to complete words and sentences

Unit 15: Sounds of C, G, and S
Identify the soft and hard sounds of letters c and g and variant sounds of the letter s by
• developing auditory and visual discrimination of the given letter/sounds
• discriminating the different sounds of the three letters within words
