Unit 1: How to Locate Information
Locate information by
• identifying information in title, author, and subject entries in a library’s catalogue
• using the library computer and the card catalogue
• locating books on a shelf
• identifying information on the spines of books (Dewey Decimal System)
• locating fiction and nonfiction by category
• previewing the information contained in various parts of a book
• using key words in questions to locate the appropriate entry in an encyclopedia index
• generating equivalent and category words for key words
• skimming article headings

Unit 2: Word Structures
Analyze the structure of multisyllabic words by
• understanding how affixes change the meaning of root words
• identifying negative prefixes, prefixes that indicate size or amount, and prefixes that tell where or when
• identifying common suffixes:
-able
-ably
-ly
-y
-ish
-ous
-less
-ment
-ship
• forming new words with roots, prefixes, and suffixes

Unit 3: Multiple Meanings and Word Origins
Use the dictionary to determine the appropriate word meaning by
• noting the sequence in dictionary entries
• understanding the form and function of dictionary guide words and entry words
• identifying the component parts of a dictionary entry
• identifying the multiple meanings of familiar words
• using context clues to identify the part of speech of a multiple-meaning word
• testing each meaning in the entry for appropriateness
• learning how word origins can help clarify present-day usage of a word
• choosing the correct meaning of homographs in context

Unit 4: Distinguishing Between News and Propaganda
Distinguish between news and propaganda by
• differentiating between statements of fact and statements of opinion and belief
• identifying types of propaganda: product, political, public service, and prejudicial
• identifying three propaganda techniques: making false promises, name calling, and bandwagon/testimonial
• recognizing the purpose and uses of propaganda
• identifying and analyzing propaganda statements and techniques
• identifying the best authority on a given subject
• distinguishing between direct and implied statements

Unit 5: Using Graphs
Interpret graphs by
• analyzing picture, circle, and bar graphs
• comparing information in a graph
• constructing picture, bar, and circle graphs
• using graphs to find answers to three types of questions: how much, largest amount, and more than
