Unit 1: Locating Information in a Book
Identify and locate information by
• understanding the form and function of the cover, title, title page, chapter heads, and table of contents
• using the glossary to clarify the meaning of given words
• using simple, two-level, and three-level indexes to locate specific information

Unit 2: Using the Dictionary to Find the Meanings of Words in Context
Use the dictionary to clarify meaning by
• recognizing the features of a dictionary
• understanding the form and function of guide words and entry words
• using sentence context to determine which of several definitions of a word makes sense in context

Unit 3: Reading Maps and Globes
Interpret maps and globes by
• identifying the function of a compass rose and a map legend
• locating states, cities, state capitals, and oceans on a political map
• measuring distances between cities by using a bar scale
• combining information on political maps with special purpose maps showing rainfall and climate regions
• reading latitude and longitude lines on a globe
• measuring distances north and south of the equator, and east and west of the prime meridian

Unit 4: Using Time Lines to Make Inferences about History
Understand the purpose of historical and biographical time lines by
• placing consecutive events in a sequence on a time line
• representing different unit measurements on a time line
• locating sequential information in a passage and plotting it on a time line
• making inferences, using information on the time line
• recognizing cause-and-effect connections between events on the time line
• comparing events on the time line

Unit 5: Outlining to Organize Main Ideas and Details
Construct a two-level outline from written text by
• using charts to categorize information given in paragraphs
• applying the concept of parallel structure of an outline to organize main ideas and details
• transferring information from a chart into outline form
• verifying each step with an outline checklist to ensure that the outline follows proper form
• locating the main idea and details in a selection
• paraphrasing the information into outline form
• writing a summary from an outline

Unit 6: Reading Charts to Locate and Compare Information
Compare information in charts by
• organizing information into columns and rows in three- and four-column charts
• identifying key words in questions as clues to help locate information
• using chart entries as categories for making comparisons of attributes

Unit 7: Reading Diagrams to Combine Visual and Textual Information
Interpret information in process diagrams showing movement and stages by
• combining information in a location or cross-section diagram with related text
• interpreting direction symbols in a process diagram
• understanding visual and textual representation of sequence in a stage diagram
